Devlog 8: Character Solidification and updates
I'm sitting here at 8:30 AM again, coffee in hand, trying to actually put names to some of the shapes moving around in my head. I've spent the last week talking about the "vibe" and the "glitches," but a world doesn't really breathe until you've got people living in it. I'm trying to solidify the cast without making it feel like a crowded elevator.
I've been thinking about the Mercs. If the world is falling apart, there are always going to be people who just want to get paid to survive it. There's this character Onyx I've been sketching. I want him to feel heavy. He uses this "hardened shadow" version of the Null as armor, so he’s basically a walking tank of matte black corruption. Then there's Spark, who’s the total opposite. She uses yellow kinetic crystals—refined Null—to move fast. I'm picturing her as this jittery, high-energy contrast to Onyx's grounded weight. They’re just trying to navigate the mess between the big factions.
Then there’s Nocturne. I'm really leaning into the idea of the Null-Bonded being more like a cult than just a group of infected people. Nocturne is someone who’s totally embraced the "evolution" of the Null. To them, the infection isn't a bug; it's a feature. They see the world being rewritten as a good thing, which makes them a great foil for Minus. While Minus is desperately trying to hold onto his original self, Nocturne is trying to let go of theirs completely.
I also wanted to flesh out that rogue spy from ECO I mentioned. I’m calling her Specter. She’s the one who’s going to be the bridge between the high-tech hacker world and the grimy reality Minus lives in. She’s got this "defragmentation" goal that’s basically heresy to everyone else. To ECO, she’s a traitor for working with a Null-Bonded entity like Minus, and to the Null Hierarchy, she’s just more data to be overwritten.
It feels good to finally have some names on the page. It makes the cold war between ANCHOR and the rest of them feel a bit more personal. I’m still just a guy in a room with a laptop, but these characters are starting to feel like they’ve got their own lives now. I'm going to spend the rest of the morning trying to figure out how Specter and Minus actually meet for the first time without immediately trying to kill each other. Catch you guys tomorrow.
