Devlog 9: Minus lore drop time

It’s 8:30 AM and I’m actually feeling pretty good about where Minus is heading. I’ve realized that to make him work, he can’t just be a "cool guy with a monster arm." He’s got to be a guy who’s terrified of what he’s becoming. I’ve been writing some back-story fragments where he remembers being a standard soldier before the infection took hold.

The thing about his left arm—the one overwritten by the Null—is that it’s not just a weapon. It’s a sensory organ. He can "feel" the glitches in the air before they happen. When he’s near a heavy concentration of Null, the white shards in his arm start to vibrate and hum, like a tuning fork that’s about to shatter. It’s a constant, low-grade agony that he’s just learned to live with. He’s a high-ranking entity in the Hierarchy now, which means the other infected look up to him like some kind of dark messiah, but all he wants is to find a way to stop the rewriting process before his brain gets hit next.

I’m picturing this scene where he tries to use a normal piece of tech—like a simple door pad—and his corrupted hand just melts the interface into a puddle of digital slag. He’s literally becoming incompatible with the world he’s trying to save. It’s that tragic disconnect that makes him the perfect partner for Specter, the rogue spy. She’s all about precision and "defragmenting," while he’s the walking embodiment of the crash.

On a side note, since I’m starting to see the scenes so clearly in my head, I’ve been thinking about the future. I know I said I’m just a guy on Blogger right now, but man, I’d love to see this move. If there are any animators out there lurking in the three people who read this, or if you know someone who digs that Murder Drones high-contrast look, keep me in mind. I’m a long way off from a full production, but I’m always down to chat with people who get the vision.

Anyway, I’ve got some more sketches of Minus’s "glitch-face" to finish. When he gets stressed or his power flares up, his features should just dissolve into visual static for a split second. It’s a small detail, but I think it’ll look sick if I ever get this animated. Catch you guys tomorrow morning.
